Local MP voices concern over safety of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe

Following reports of the mistreatment of British-Iranian citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, local Member of Parliament Nick Thomas-Symonds has voiced his concerns over the Government’s failure to act to protect her wellbeing. An Urgent Question was submitted to the House of Commons by Ms. Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s MP, Tulip Siddiq MP, following reports that Ms. Zaghari-Ratcliffe is being denied medical attention after discovering lumps in her breasts.

Ms. Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been detained in Iran since 2016 after she was arrested at the airport following a regular visit to family in Iran. Since her detainment, Ms. Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been subject to punitive measures, including being kept in solitary confinement, denial of medical treatment and having her food ration and medical rations cut, in what the Shadow Foreign Secretary, Emily Thornberry MP, has called “barbaric”.

During the discussions in the Chamber, Member of Parliament for Torfaen, Nick Thomas-Symonds MP pressed the Minister for the Middle East to convey the damage that Ms. Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s treatment is doing not only to Ms. Zaghari-Ratcliffe herself, but to Iran’s standing in the international community.

Mr. Thomas-Symonds stated, “these events have been very traumatic for Nazanin’s family, and not least for her sister-in-law, who lives in my constituency. Can the Minister confirm that the ongoing inhuman treatment of Nazanin is doing great damage to Iran’s reputation on the international stage, and that that point will be made directly to Iran’s supreme leader and to the Iranian Prime Minister?” The Minister, Alistair Burt MP, acknowledged this as an opportunity to “take a course of action that could change this perception of Iran”.

When asked about the Minister’s response, Mr. Thomas-Symonds stated:

“This is such a difficult time for Nazanin’s family. She needs proper medical care urgently and she should be released to be home with her family as soon as possible. She is being subjected to such inhuman treatment – this must stop.”
