Nick Thomas-Symonds MP speaks with staff at Heathrow

Last week, Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, the Shadow Home Secretary, visited Heathrow Airport alongside Labour Leader Keir Starmer MP, to assess implementation of the Government’s hotel quarantine system, due to come in to force on Monday.

The current measures have been roundly criticised as too weak. For example, this system leaves the door open to potentially vaccine resistant strains because under the Government’s plans – which have been unsafely delayed – only those travelling directly from “red list” countries would be required to isolate in accommodation, risking the import of new strains.

During his visit, Mr Thomas-Symonds spoke with staff about their work throughout the pandemic and preparations for hotel quarantine.

Commenting on Thursday, the Torfaen MP said:

“The UK Government needs to do far more but it’s clear how hard-working and dedicated our frontline workers are in these tough times.”

Following his visit, the Shadow Home Secretary wrote to the Home Secretary, Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, demanding action to fix flaws in the current hotel quarantining system. A full copy of this letter may be read below.
