Today the Shadow Home Secretary offered to convene a meeting between care workers and the Home Secretary to discuss the skilled and difficult nature of their work.

Nick Thomas-Symonds MP made this invitation following his criticism of the Government at Home Office Questions earlier today, where he condemned the exclusion of care workers from the list of professions that qualify for the Health and Care Visa.

In his letter, Mr Thomas-Symonds MP reiterated that it was wrong, amidst both a global pandemic and a staffing crisis in the care sector, to lock care workers out of the Health and Care Visa system. He wrote: “In England alone over 120,000 vacancies exist in the social care sector, while currently 115,000 workers in the care sector in England are EU nationals.

“I would welcome the opportunity to work with care workers and representatives from the trade union movement, to arrange a session for you and I to meet with social care workers so they can set out directly to you how challenging and skilful their work is. I’m sure you will welcome this opportunity.”
