Nick Thomas-Symonds visited local manufacturer Cummins in Cwmbran to mark National Apprenticeship Week (10th – 16th February); an annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships, and the value they bring to learners, employers, and the wider Welsh economy.

The latest full year of data (2022/23) shows there were 22,260 apprenticeship starts in Wales, with 725 across Torfaen.*

Cummins is a leading global supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking, aftermarket and electric powertrain solutions for commercial vehicle and industrial markets.

During the visit, the Torfaen MP met with site managers to discuss the skills they need to grow their business, the support they give to apprentices, and the opportunities and career paths open to young people at Cummins.

Mr Thomas-Symonds was also able to hear directly from apprentices themselves how they got onto their course, the opportunities that were available to them, and how the government could make apprenticeships a more attractive opportunity for young people in Torfaen.

Nick Thomas-Symonds MP said: “Apprentices, training providers, and employers in Torfaen should be celebrated for their impact on our community and local economy.

It is always an honour to speak at the Newport & District Group Training Association Graduation event each year to celebrate local apprentices, and I was delighted to mark National Apprenticeship Week at Cummins in Cwmbran by meeting their apprentices to discuss how they got onto their course, and the work they have been doing.

Apprenticeship opportunities rely on employers like Cummins who train these talented individuals, so it was good to hear what the Government can do to further support important local businesses in Torfaen.”

Gwyn Gardiner, Plant Manager, Cummins said: “It was great to introduce Nick to our apprentices and highlight the fantastic work they undertake in Cwmbran. Apprenticeships are essential for Cummins and we’re excited to work with educators and the Government to support and grow skills for the future.”
